A survey of some 2000 motorist has found that over half admit to being confused by vehicle maintenance.

The survey was commissioned by fast fit chain Kwik Fit in the UK and highlights the lack of knowledge many drivers have about maintenance issues. It found that 42% would be stumped if they had to change a flat tyre, 36% don’t understand basic dashboard warning lights and 11% could not check their oil.

In relation to vehicle testing, 42% did not know that MOT (the UK equivalent of the NCT) stands for Ministry of Transport and almost 60% did not know the difference between an MOT and a service.

Kwik Fit Operations Director Paul Boulton commented, “The level of misunderstanding around what keeps our cars running safely is pretty shocking. The industry should be doing more to demystify these misconceptions.”
