The IMI recently held an informative demonstration evening at the Dublin Institute of Technology’s, Beresford Street Refinish Training Centre. A presentation and demonstration was given by Colin Sinclair, Area Sales Manager for Norbar.

Norbar are a global leader in the field of torque tightening and measuring equipment, with a large UK manufacturing facility supply tools, systems and calibration equipment on a worldwide basis. The company is particularly active in the industrial and commercial vehicle sectors and is now looking to further build on its presence in the automotive market.

Colin explained why the use of impact guns in automotive workshops poses a significant health and safety danger. In particular he pointed out the white finger and hearing problems can result from prolonged use of such devices and from a business perspective, this could lead a garage operator open to expensive employee compensation claims. Colin also explained how impact equipment lacked torque accuracy, with wheel nuts especially often being over tightened and damaged.

Colin then demonstrated a pneumatic TrukTorque system, a powered torque-tightening device that offers significant benefits over impact guns. The easy to use device, offers quite low vibration operation and highly accurate torque tightening. The equipment is now widely used by truck and bus fleet operators and is also gaining favour with a growing number of automotive workshops.

The importance or torque equipment calibration was also discussed and those attending the demonstration were also given the opportunity to use the Norbar equipment.
