Carmakers may soon be compelled to install artificial noise generators on new electric and hybrid vehicles, to prevent pedestrian incidents. Authorities fear that electric cars could become silent killers, if action is not taken.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, has already drawn up standards on the issue and legally binding regulations could be in force as early as the end of next year. The UN agency has been working on developing noise standards for some time and its regulations will be binding on the EU, as well as other major industrial countries.

Christian This, the chairman of the team working on the project said, “The development of acoustic warning devices for electric and hybrid electric vehicles, which market share is rapidly growing in many countries, will be an important element to enhance the safety of these vehicles.” He added, “A regulation will ensure a consistent approach across the industry, which is key for the effectiveness and acceptance of such devices.”
