Smog Doctor DPF & fuel system cleaner put to the test

All Task Solutions recently conducted some product testing at MB Auto Centre in Dungarvan, to demonstrate the effectiveness of a new product designed to clean Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF). The Smog Doctor VB45 DPF Cleaner is designed by The Smog Doctor and distributed by All Task Solutions.

Clogged DPFs are a persistent and growing problem in Ireland. Many diesel cars were sold to people whose driving patterns will rarely, or never, allow for a DPF regeneration to occur. The result is a DPF that slowly fills up and will never be cleared on it’s own. Engine performance will slowly drop and eventually they will be asking for your help.

At the recent product demonstration the DPF cleaner was used on a 2007 Volvo S40 with a 1.6l diesel engine, which had been lacking power recently. The diesel engine had clocked up 240,000 kilometres, and as a result of the driving patterns of the owner, the diesel particulate filter was partially blocked and the idle was slightly rough. A single canister of Smog Doctor VB45 Extreme Cleaner was connected to the air inlet, between the air filter and the turbocharger. A control valve was fitted onto the canister and small plastic tubing was routed out from the front seat to under the bonnet. The Volvo was driven at a contant steady speed while the control valve slowly emptied the cleaner into the intake air.

After this brief treatment that lasted only 30 kilometres in total, the engine idle was greatly improved. The Volvo was idling noticeably smoother.

The partially plugged DPF was cleaned next. A similar tube was used to inject a canister of VB45 DPF Cleaner into the upstream side of the DPF. The cleaner was injected with the engine fully warmed up and at idle. When all of the VB45 had been injected into the DPF, the engine was shut off and the cleaner was left for three hours, to soak into and dissolve any carbon/soot in the DPF.

When the engine was re-started, there was a large volume of dark exhaust fumes from the tail pipe. The smoke continued for several minutes as the cleaner was forced out of the exhaust, along with a fair sized puddle of soot-coloured cleaner on the garage floor under the tail pipe. The results of this fuel system and DPF cleaning as reported by the owner were also very positive. The owner was very happy with the power that had been restored to the engine.

A small sample of the VB45 DPF Cleaner was put into a container with a lump of road tarmac about the size of a grape. Within seconds, the tarmac was being dissolved by the cleaner and the liquid quickly went from clear to dark brown within a minute. After a few hours the bitumen was completely dissolved into the cleaner. The cleaner was also able to absorb a significant amount of water, demonstrating another benefit of the cleaner.
