The “Black box” is supposed to be the future as far as insurance and safety goes for young drivers, but an incident in Scotland has highlighted how telematics systems might not always have the desired effect.
23 year old Steven Baxter was caught by Police, appropriately outside of Perth Prison, in January doing 73 mph in a 30 mph zone. When questioned why he was going so fast he said it was to beat the curfew on the insurance tracker fitted to his Mini Cooper.
The device was fitted to his vehicle to help reduce the insurance premium, but ata a court hearing this week the Perth Court Sheriff commented, “You might find your premium is a bit higher now”, when handing down his sentence of a 12 month driving ban and £900 fine.
