Moaning and grumbling has almost become a national pastime in recent years. Like most industries, the bodyshop business has a high level of discontent, having suffered greatly during the economic downturn. A number of unique issue like: The strangle hold insurers have on the industry, environmental regulation, the black economy, fast changing technology, rising costs and decreasing volume all spring to mind, as key issues which will affect every bodyshop's future.
Most people will grumble and moan, but generally accept change for the worst as inevitable. However, a few will question things and are prepared to stand-up for their rights. Some years ago a group of like-minded repairers got together to challenge environmental regulations that were affecting the whole industry. They formed the Vehicle Repairers Association (VRA) and with limited resources, but lots of persistence, the group eventually secured a change to the environmental regulatory regime that most saw as unjust.
The VRA has also done some good work in other areas such as training, the promotion of industry professionalism and highlighting free consumer choice in repair.
Like every organisation the VRA periodically needs an injection of new blood and new ideas in order to build momentum. As such, the current organising committee of the Association is urging bodyshop operators concerned about their future to join a new steering group, which will shape the activities and the policies of the organisation.
This new group is being formed to better reflect the geographical spread of members in the country and the differing viewpoints of repairers. The VRA says it wants a group of eight to ten active repairers, who will come together to discuss the key issues affecting the industry and formulate plans that can assist bodyshops secure a better future. The group would meet a maximum of three times a year, so the time commitment for each individual would not be excessive.
