Sweden pioneers green driving test

While Ireland may be struggling to cope with the strain on its driving test system, other European countries are pioneering new elements in their driving tests that actually promote more environmentally friendly motoring.

Sweden made eco-driving skills part of its licence qualification criteria at the end of 2007 and plans to add similar demands to the truck and motorcycle tests in April. The theory is that by getting drivers into good habits at the outset it will mean that their “green driving” approach will stay with them for life. Examples of eco-driving techniques taught in Sweden: not to start the car until you are fully prepared, to slow the vehicle before hitting the brakes, drive in as high a gear as possible, and to avoid aggressive acceleration. Many other countries are now taking an interest in the Swedish test and rising fuel costs means there is a growing demand from European fleet operators for eco-driving lessons.
